Romelle American

Romelle is an abstract painter and mural artist hailing from Detroit and based in Mexico City.

Her colorful, energetic work explores modalities of healing with color, and the connection the artist has to the cities in which she’s lived. During her residency at Ponyride Detroit, Romelle was introducted to the rigor of the studio, which inspired her 2016 solo show “Through Healing,” where she used new materials to explore how art can heal on a personal and community scale,

In 2017, Romelle was the resident artist at The Forge, followed by her 2019 residency at TAXI in Denver, where she produced her densely saturated series III, marking her first use of spraypaint on canvas. In 2022, Romelle created a series featured in Mexico City’s Habitat Expo combining paintings, neon and a mural installation. This body of work closely reflects her multidimensional practice, and the unique way she studies both painting and texture as a whole.

Romelle continues to work out of her studios in Denver, CO and Mexico City where she also serves as the creative director of BABE WALLS.
